Can ChatGPT Watch Videos? Transcribe the File First, Then Ask
ChatGPT does not watch a YouTube link or a normal video file. Transcribe a file you already have, then paste the text for a summary or questions.
No. ChatGPT cannot watch a video the way people mean it. Pasting a YouTube link does not play the video. Uploading a normal MP4 does not match the audio-upload path OpenAI documents. The workflow that works is smaller. Get a transcript of a video or audio file you already have. Then paste that text into ChatGPT and ask for a summary or for answers.
Every limit below comes from a public page checked on 2 November 2026. The product site is whisperweb.dev.
The short answer
People ask this when they have a lecture, a screen recording, or their own YouTube video, and they want notes. They hope one chat box can open the video, follow it, and write the summary. That is two jobs, not one.
The first job is speech to text. A speech model listens to the audio track and writes words. On whisperweb.dev, the free path does that in your browser. The second job is writing. ChatGPT is good at that once it has text it can read.
Use this order:
- Start with a video or audio file you already have, and that you are allowed to use.
- Turn it into text on video to text. If the file is a YouTube video you are allowed to keep, the matching page is YouTube to text.
- Read the transcript. Fix names. Delete lines you do not want to share.
- Paste the text into ChatGPT. Ask for a summary, a list of questions, or quotes.
Prompt examples for meetings, interviews, and classes are in how to summarize a recording with ChatGPT. This article is about the video step those prompts cannot skip.
What "watch a video" actually means
A video file is a container. Inside it, one track is pictures shown over time. Another track is sound. Watching means both tracks, for the whole length, in order.
A chat model reads text. It does not open the container, play the frames, and listen, unless a separate tool does that work and hands it text or still images. If that tool is missing, the model only has the words you typed.
Speech to text uses the sound track only. It does not read words that appear on screen and are never spoken. A slide that says "Q3 target: 40" is invisible to the transcript if nobody says it. You have to type that line yourself if the summary needs it.
That boundary matters. A summary of the transcript is a summary of what was said. It is not a description of what was shown.
What OpenAI's upload page says about video files
OpenAI's file uploads help page is the document for attaching files to ChatGPT. Checked on 2 November 2026, it says audio uploads are available on paid ChatGPT plans and workspaces, including Enterprise. Audio uploads are not available on the Free plan.
The same page lists audio formats such as WAV, MP3, M4A, and audio-only MP4. Then it draws a hard line: WebM and MP4 files identified as video are not supported by audio uploads. A camera export, a Zoom recording saved as video, and a screen recording are video files. The documented audio path does not take them.
An audio-only MP4 is the counterexample. It has sound and no picture track. The help page lists it as audio. Uploading that file on a paid plan can fit the documented path. It is still not watching. There are no frames. Anything that was only written on screen is gone.
The page also sets limits on the audio path itself. Audio files can be up to 512 MB. Longer recordings may be split into sections, and very long recordings may time out. Transcripts may contain errors, and speaker identification may be unreliable. Free ChatGPT users are limited to 3 file uploads per day. A pasted transcript is not a file upload. Text files are capped at 2 million tokens, which is far above a normal lecture transcript.
ChatGPT can also read images you attach, including pictures inside a PDF. A screenshot is one moment. It is not a 20-minute video. This article does not ask you to screenshot a video frame by frame.
A YouTube link is not the video
A watch-page address is a line of text. It looks like a link. It does not contain the frames or the soundtrack. If you paste it into ChatGPT and ask what happens at minute 12, the chat does not press play. It may guess from a title, or it may say it cannot open the link. Neither result is watching the video.
The YouTube to text page does not fetch a YouTube watch-page URL either. It transcribes a media file that is already on your device. Use it only for a file you own, a public-domain or Creative Commons file, or a file you have permission to keep. Do not take someone else's YouTube or TikTok video by pasting the link into a downloader. This article does not teach that.
If you do not already have the file, stop. The rest of the workflow starts after the file is yours to use.
Step 1: Transcribe a file you already have
Open the page that matches the file. A normal video file goes to video to text. A YouTube video you are allowed to keep, already saved as a file, goes to YouTube to text. Both use the same free limits.
Free local mode, from the pricing page and the whisperweb.dev product facts:
- The file is processed in your browser. On the free path it is not uploaded.
- No sign-up.
- No daily file limit. You can run as many files as you want in a day.
- Each file must be 20 minutes or less and 200 MB or less. Both limits apply.
A 12-minute screen recording of your own demo fits the free path if it is also under 200 MB. A 45-minute class does not. Length fails even when the file is small. Size fails even when the clip is short. A huge uncompressed video can miss the 200 MB cap before it misses the clock.
Longer than 20 minutes? Split the file at a pause and transcribe each part. The guide on splitting a long recording shows how to stay on the free path. If you do this every week, the Unlimited plan uses cloud processing. The published cloud limit is 10 hours or 5 GB per file. Cloud means the file is uploaded. That is a different choice from the free browser path. Read pricing before you switch.
Export TXT when you want to paste. You can also export JSON, SRT, or VTT from the same transcript. SRT and VTT are captions. They are useful later. ChatGPT wants the plain words.
This article does not give an accuracy percentage. Noise, two people talking at once, and odd names all cause errors. Read the transcript against the audio before you treat a sentence as a quote.
Step 2: Paste the text into ChatGPT
Clean the text for two minutes first. Add speaker names if the summary needs owners. The transcript is one block. It does not label people for you. Fix product names. Delete a password, a health detail, or a client name you do not want in a chat.
Free transcription stays on your device. The paste does not. Once the text is in ChatGPT, it goes to OpenAI under your ChatGPT settings. Cut private lines before that handoff.
Then ask for a specific result. A vague prompt gets a vague paragraph. Two prompts that stay honest:
- "Summarize this transcript in bullets. Separate decisions, open questions, and action items. If an owner or a date is not in the text, write 'not stated'. Do not guess."
- "Answer these questions using only the transcript. After each answer, quote the sentence you used. If the transcript does not say, write 'not in the transcript'."
Check the result. Search the transcript for each action item and each number. If a line is not there, drop it. The point of having text is that you can check.
Boundaries and counterexamples
- A YouTube or TikTok link. The link is not the media. Do not paste someone else's link into a downloader to manufacture a file. If you do not already have a file you are allowed to use, this workflow does not apply.
- lecture.mp4 uploaded to ChatGPT. OpenAI's help page says MP4 files identified as video are not supported by audio uploads. Transcribe the file first, then paste text.
- An audio-only export on a paid ChatGPT plan. That can match the documented audio path, up to 512 MB, and long files may time out. It still misses on-screen text, and the Free plan cannot upload audio at all.
- A 90-minute, 1.2 GB recording. Free local mode stops at 20 minutes and 200 MB. Unlimited cloud processing allows up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file, and the file is uploaded. ChatGPT should still receive the transcript, not the video.
- Music, crosstalk, or a heavy accent the model mishandles. The transcript will be thin or mixed up. ChatGPT cannot recover the pictures from bad text. Fix the transcript, or accept that the summary will be weak.
- Slides nobody reads aloud. They will not appear. Add the on-screen line by hand if it matters.
- A legal or medical record that must be quoted exactly. The OpenAI page says transcripts may contain errors. Compare quotes with the transcript, and the transcript with the audio, before you publish them.
Quick FAQ
Can ChatGPT watch a YouTube video if I paste the link?
No. The link is text. ChatGPT does not play the video from that address. whisperweb.dev does not fetch a YouTube watch-page URL either.
Can I upload an MP4 and have ChatGPT watch it?
Not on the documented audio-upload path. That page says WebM and MP4 files identified as video are not supported. Turn the file into a transcript, then paste the text.
What are the free limits on whisperweb.dev?
Free local mode runs in the browser with no upload, no sign-up, and no daily file limit. Each file can be up to 20 minutes and 200 MB. Unlimited is cloud processing, up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file. Those numbers are on pricing and in llms.txt.
Do I need an account?
Not for free transcription on whisperweb.dev. ChatGPT needs its own account. Audio upload inside ChatGPT is a paid feature. Pasting text is available on the Free ChatGPT plan, subject to that product's own limits.
What if my video is longer than 20 minutes?
Split it and transcribe each part for free, or use Unlimited cloud processing for a file up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Then paste the text.
