SRT, or SubRip, is a plain-text caption file. Each cue has a number, a start and end time, and one or more lines of text. A blank line separates the cues. Times use a comma before the milliseconds, as in 00:00:01,200.
Video editors, VLC, and the subtitle upload box in YouTube Studio expect this shape. The file does not contain the video. It only contains the words and the times. You upload the .srt next to the video in the tool that publishes or edits it.
When to use SRT instead of VTT
Use SRT when the next step is a video editor or a creator platform. Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and YouTube Studio all accept a standard SubRip file. Use VTT when the caption will load in an HTML5 video player. WebVTT can store cue settings such as alignment. SRT does not. If you later convert VTT to SRT, those settings are dropped and the words and times remain.
Already have a caption file and only need the other extension? That is a conversion, not a new transcription. Use the subtitle converter. This page creates the cues from the spoken audio or video.
How to generate SRT from audio or video
Add a file you own or are allowed to caption: an MP4, MOV, WebM, MP3, M4A, or another recording your browser can play. A public link works when it is the media file itself. Choose one of 99 languages, or use automatic detection, and start. Free processing runs in the browser.
The speech becomes timed cues. Change a wrong name, drag a cue that starts late, add a missing line, or delete a false start. Download the .srt only after the cues match what you want to publish. The same job can also download VTT; stay on this page when SubRip is the file you will hand off.
The broader caption workflow, including both formats, lives on generate subtitles.
Free and Pro limits
Free transcription runs in your browser for a file up to 200 MB and 20 minutes. It does not require an account. Pro is the published Whisper Web Unlimited plan: US$20 per month, or US$120 per year (shown as US$10 per month when billed yearly). Each Pro file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and a Pro batch can include 50 files. Choosing Pro uploads the file for cloud transcription. The .srt file is text you download. It is not a burned-in video.
Generate an SRT file in 3 steps
Step 1
Add the recording

Step 2
Generate timed cues
Choose the spoken language. Free files up to 200 MB and 20 minutes are processed in the browser.
Step 3
Download the .srt
Fix wording and cue times, then download SubRip. Open the file in your editor or upload it where the video is published.
What the SRT file looks like
A short standup recording can export like this. The numbers and the comma in the timestamp are what make it SubRip.
1
00:00:01,200 --> 00:00:04,000
Thanks for joining the Tuesday standup.
2
00:00:04,200 --> 00:00:07,800
The recording is a 12-minute Zoom export. Each cue number, time range, and line of dialogue is plain text. There is no WEBVTT header and no alignment setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an SRT file?
SRT is a SubRip caption file: numbered cues, comma timestamps, and the caption text. It does not contain the video.
How do I generate SRT from a video?
Upload the video, choose the spoken language, review the timed cues, and download the .srt file. The same steps work for an audio recording.
Should I download SRT or VTT?
Download SRT for video editors and creator platforms such as YouTube Studio. Download VTT for an HTML5 video player. SRT cannot store WebVTT cue settings.
Can I edit the cues before download?
Yes. Change the text, the start time, and the end time, and add or remove cues on this page. The download uses the edited cues.
Is SRT generation free?
A recording up to 200 MB and 20 minutes can be processed in the browser for free. Longer media uses Pro, the published Unlimited plan, at up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file.
Does the generator translate the subtitles?
No. It transcribes the spoken language into cues in that language. Whisper Web supports 99 languages. It does not translate the SRT into a second language on this page.
I already have an SRT file. Can this page change it to VTT?
Use the subtitle converter for an existing caption file. This generator builds new cues from audio or video.
Is my video uploaded when I generate SRT?
Free processing stays in the browser and does not upload the media. Pro uploads the file when you choose cloud transcription.
