What languages can I translate from?
Whisper supports translation from 100+ languages to English. This includes major languages like Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese, Hindi, and many more.
Can I translate to languages other than English?
Currently, Whisper's translate mode only outputs English text. This is a limitation of the underlying AI model. For other target languages, you would need to transcribe first, then use a separate translation service.
How do I enable translation mode?
Open Settings (gear icon), enable 'Multilingual' mode, then change the task from 'Transcribe' to 'Translate'. The model will now output English text regardless of the source language.
Is translation as accurate as transcription?
Translation quality is generally very good for common language pairs (e.g., Spanish→English, French→English). Less common languages may have slightly lower accuracy. Audio quality also affects results.
Is my audio sent to a translation server?
No. Both speech recognition and translation happen locally in your browser using the Whisper AI model. No audio or text is transmitted to any server.
Which model should I use for translation?
Use the Small or Medium model for best translation quality. The Tiny and Base models work but may produce less accurate translations for complex sentences or less common languages.
